Children’s Hospital Colorado Once Again Ranks Among Top 10 on the U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospital Honor Roll
AURORA, COLO. (June 11, 2013) – Children’s Hospital Colorado (Children’s Colorado) once again has been ranked among the nation’s top children’s hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.
Children’s Colorado ranked as No. 7 on the 2013-14 Best Children’s Hospital Honor Roll. High rankings in a minimum of three specialties qualified Children’s Colorado for the Honor Roll, a distinction awarded to only 10 of the 179 children’s centers nationwide.
The rankings highlight the top 50 U.S. hospitals in each of these pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. Eighty-seven hospitals ranked in at least one of the 10 specialties.
Children’s Colorado ranked in all 10 surveyed specialties and nine of the 10 ranked in the top 20. Six of the hospital’s specialties ranked among the top 10 : gastroenterology & GI surgery (No. 5), pulmonology (No. 5), diabetes & endocrinology (No. 8), neonatology (No. 9), orthopedics (No. 9) and cancer (No. 9).
The other specialties that ranked in the top 20 include: cardiology & heart surgery (No. 12), urology (No. 13), and neurology & neurosurgery (No. 18) .
Children’s has been ranked a top children’s hospital by U.S. News every year since the inception of its rankings.
“This is great news for all the children we care for who continue to have access to the nation’s best healthcare specialists in their own communities,” said Jim Shmerling, DHA, FACHE, chief executive officer, Children’s Colorado. “This ranking is just one indicator of the excellent patient care and the pioneering research conducted here. Our greatest recognition comes from patients, families and colleagues who consistently compliment and value the outstanding pediatric healthcare we provide.”
“Children’s Colorado deserves the highest praise,” said Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “Being listed in the Honor Roll shows how dedication and expertise can span multiple specialties. U.S. News wants to call attention to pediatric centers like Children’s Colorado that help the sickest kids across a wide range of medical problems.”
Each hospital’s reputation among doctors was only a small part of what U.S. News factored into its rankings. Three-quarters of each hospital’s score was determined through an analysis of patient outcomes and data on the structural resources each hospital has for pediatric care. To gather data, U.S. News used two surveys: a clinical questionnaire sent to 179 pediatric hospitals and, for the reputational assessment, a survey of 150 pediatric specialists and subspecialists in each specialty. The 1,500 physicians were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty, setting aside location and expense.
