Many new Moms are anxious about Breastfeeding their baby and our current culture certainly contributes to this. Most hospitals and pediatricians send new moms home with formulas and bottles “just in case” you might need them….well of course we should use them if those professionals thought we needed to!! How do we know if the baby is getting enough nourishment just from breastfeeding? My baby seems really fussy…maybe she is still hungry? She is not sleeping through the night yet (she is 3 weeks old), maybe she needs some formula to supplement and sleep longer.
These are just an example of comments I have heard from my clients when they begin breastfeeding their newborns and I am sure some of them sound familiar. Here are a few tips to help alleviate some of these anxieties.
Take a breastfeeding class before your baby is born or work with a breastfeeding educator one on one prior to your birth.
Have breastfeeding support during the first hours after birth so you can get started on the right path and feel more confident from the very beginning. Doulas are great for this!!
